The significant Carboniferous discovery of the Monterey Gas Field, made in 1989 by Arco, is the principal feature in Block 49/8c. The discovery well 49/8-2 found a 300 foot gross gas column in the Carboniferous section and tested 5 million cubic feet per day despite severe formation damage.

In 2006, the Black Rock group led by Wintershall drilled an appraisal well, 49/8c-4, which again encountered significant gas shows in the Permian and Carboniferous sections. However the well only flowed 850,000 cubic feet per day due to, it is believed, low reservoir quality and formation damage in the well. Operator estimated P50 reserves are 225 bcf GIIP. Development options are currently under consideration.

The Stinson gas prospect is also of significant interest with potential reserves of 147 bcf GIIP. The Winchester prospect lies mainly in the adjoining block operated by Newfield. The portion within 49/8c is estimated to contain potential reserves of 23 bcf.
